WARNING: this is a very long and complete synopsis of the story. There are
some complete scripted scenes and descriptions.

THE HUMAN FACTOR Episode 3-16 (1st Run)

Written by Phil Bedard and Larry LaLonde
Directed by Geraint Wyn Davies

Post Production Release:

Guest Starring Deborah Duchene as Janette, Jean Pierre Bergeron as Mario
Larouche, Galen Wyn Davies as Patrick McDonagh, David Keeley as Robert
McDonagh

Prologue:
A man in his underwear (that's a switch!) watches TV in a motel room. His
lady friend is taking a shower, so she doesn't hear the knock on the door
that gets Mario's attention. When he opens the door a woman speaks to him in
French then shoots him. His body falls on the bed (thud!). The killer
searches for and finds a locker key then leaves the room. The girl who was
showering comes in and finds the dead Mario. She glances at the window and
sees Janette taking one last look before fleeing the scene.

The Story:
Nick and Tracy question the victim's lady friend, a one night stand, that
only knows that the man was from Montreal. Tracy asks her to meet with the
police sketch artist to get a description of the woman she saw at the window.
Nick finds Mario's wallet with a Montreal Arson Investigator's ID in it.
Natalie determines that a small caliber, silenced weapon was used and that
Mario either new the killer or didn't have time to duck.

Janette drives as she listens to LaCroix, on the car radio, talk about winter
and how it soothes the tattered heart. She recalls when she called LaCroix to
the Raven to explain that she was ready to move on. She gives him the deed to
the Raven and makes him promise to take care of strays, like them, that need
refuge.

A boy, Patrick (a young blond brick), moves forward from the the back seat
and asks Janette if she is okay. She tells him she is and wants to know if he
would like to visit with his Aunt Peggy for a few days. He says that he
would, and they drive away.

Back at the precinct, the witness is working with the computer sketch artist.
Tracy and Nick watch from Reese's office. Reese tells them that Montreal
arson says that Mario Larouche was booked off work. Nick questions why he
would vacation in a motel in Toronto.

Nick and Tracy continue to watch the sketch artists as she finishes the
composite. A puzzled Nick recognizes that it is Janette. He recalls when
LaCroix brought him across while an anxious Janette stood waiting. He awoke
from his mortal death and passionately kissed her. Now, they would live
together forever.

Nick takes the picture to the Raven and shows it to LaCroix. He makes a
remark about it not being very flattering; whoever she may be. Nick says that
it is Janette, but LaCroix says that when one of them moves on they
disappear. He explains that if she were around they would sense her.

Nick wants to know why Janette left. He believes that there was more to it
than just being her time, but LaCroix doesn't speak.

LaCroix remembers why she decided to move on. She was beginning to have
doubts about what she was. She was beginning to believe that Nichola's quest
for mortality may be right. She likes what she is and doesn't want to end up
like him, drawn to mortals.. to humanity. She must get away from him to
reaffirm what she is. LaCroix agrees. She asks him not to tell Nichola,
because he already has enough doubt in his life.

Nick snaps him out of his retrospection when he asks if she ever told him why
she left. LaCroix says that he never asked!

Janette is driving and comes to a stop. A car pulls up next to her and her
car is sprayed with automatic gun fire.

It's dawn as Nick enters his apartment with much on his mind. Is it Janette?
Why is LaCroix lying to him? What the hell is going on? He briefly remembers
Janette kissing him 800 years ago; he turns around and she is there. It *is*
her! She says:- "Nichola..."

She's not the elegant strong willed woman he remembers, but a scared lonely
girl dressed in a long print skirt and a Levi jacket. Her hair is down at
shoulders length and her eyes are so sad.

She tells Nick that she killed Larouche and she needs his help. He asks her
why she didn't just go away. She explains that there is evidence that she
must find before whoever shot at her finds it. Nick is startled as he asks
who shot at her and why. She asks him to arrest her or help her, but he
needn't decide now, because she needs to rest.

Tracy continues her investigation of the Larouche murder. She learns that
Janette's shot up car belonged to an arsonist investigator from Montreal.
Reese asks her if she thinks it may be connected to the murder. She isn't
sure, but follows up on it.

Janette awakes and asks Nick if he will help. He says that he will and has
booked off work. He asks her if she really intended never to see him again.
She replies that she thought it was best; Nick tells her she was wrong. She
explains that she left because of his quest for humanity. After 800 years he
could no longer live without his humanity and she began to think that he was
right. Janette says:- "800 years is a long time to live with a cold heart..
only for yourself."

Nick tells her that she should have come to her for help, but Janette says
that she didn't want to be helped; she was afraid. She had become accustomed
to her immortality and more so, she didn't want to go through the suffering
that Nick was going through. She moved to Montreal, a small taste of Paris,
but still close to the family. While trying to affirm the vampire in her, she
got caught in the very dilemma she left to avoid. (She fell in love with a
Montreal arson investigator, Robert McDonagh, who was accused of being
involved with Larouche in an arson for profit scheme.)

Nick drives her to the Civic Center where the locker that contains the
evidence is. She tells how the evidence will prove that Larouche was being
paid by a real estate developer to set a series of fires. The evidence was
obtained by her friend who was framed for the arson cover up and murdered by
Larouche.

Tracy follows up on her leads by going to see Janette's friend's sister. She
tells her that Robert's girlfriend and his son Patrick are in town for a few
days and that she had the car. She tells her that Patrick is staying with
her, and Janette is staying with her brother, Nicholas de Brabant, in the
city. Tracy asks about Janette and then shows her the composite drawing.
Peggy (the sister) asks what is wrong and Tracy says that she might know
something about a case they are working on. Peggy says that Patrick might
know how to contact them. Patrick doesn't now where to find them, but he has
a picture of them that Janette gave to him. He shows it to Tracy and she sees
Janette and her partner Nick.

Janette tells Nichola that her friend's name was Robert McDonagh and she
loved him more than he could ever imagine! She tells him that he has a son,
Patrick that is an innocent. She doesn't want him to grow up believing his
father was a criminal. She says that the boy's mother died five years ago and
now she is his mother.. his official guardian.

After arriving at the Civic Center, Nicholas asks how Janette and Robert met.
She tells of how she was living in a loft in Montreal and he came in and
swept her off her feet. (A flashback shows a fireman coming into a burning
building and taking her to safety.) Janette says that he saved five others
that night and she couldn't get over a mortal risking his one short life to
save others. She envied his courage, his mortality. She looks at Nicholas and
says:- "He reminded me of you. //a beat// It was through him that I realized
//a beat// that your quest to become mortal again is right."

Nicholas replies:- "It's strange hearing that coming from you."

Nicholas asks how the two of them could be together and did she tell him what
she was. In flashback, she explains how she finally told Robert that she was
an immortal. She had him feel her heart and when he felt no pulse, he was
startled.. to say the least! Then, as proof positive, she transformed into a
vampire!

They are about to open the locker when Nick senses that they are being
watched. They leave without the evidence, but are chased by two henchmen that
were sent after Janette by the developers. At the bottom of a long escalator,
Janette is shot. She is bleeding and in pain. She looks at Nicholas and
says:- "I forgot to tell you.. I'm.. I'm mortal!"

Nick picks her up and they fly to the morgue.

ACT 4/INT - MORGUE - NIGHT
Scene xxx - w/ NATALIE, NICK and JANETTE/ Slow dolly forward.

Nick runs into the morgue and NATALIE says:- "Hey, you just missed some of my
best work, that is, if you're into post mortem cranial examinations."

NICK:- "Nat I need a favor.

A worker pushes a gurney away as Natalie dries her hands.

NATALIE:- "Thanks Jill."

Jill:- "No problem."

NATALIE:- "Makes me nervous.. favors for you usually include a little more
than can I barrow your car."

NICK:- "I'll need that too!"

Nick goes to the door and brings in Janette.

NICK:- "Come in."

A startled Natalie looks at the woman she thought was gone forever. A hurt,
scared Janette speaks in a quivering voice.

JANETTE:- "Hello, Natalie."

Nick removes her leather jacket and speaks in a hurried manner.

NICK:- "She's been shot!"

NATALIE:- "What?"

NICK:- "Nat, she needs something for the pain. Can you clean the wound and
stitch it up."

Natalie touches her then checks her pulse.

NATALIE:- "Heart rate normal //long beat// you can't be!"

NICK:- "She is!"

Camera close on Natalie's face.

//End scene//

At the Civic Center shooting scene, Tracy covers for Nick when Reese asks for
a description of Janette's friend. She says that he was tall, blond, dark
coat.. hustled her out after she was shot.

Back at the morgue Natalie patches up Janette and says that she has nothing
against vampires regaining their mortality, but how are they going to explain
protecting a confessed killer.

Nat asks Nick if he wants to know how she became mortal. Janette offers the
explanation.

In flashback Janette describes the love that made her human.

JANETTE:- "I fell in love with a mortal. //long beat// I think I knew the
change was possible the first time we made love."

Begin Flashback/ Janette is on top of Robert as they make love. She changes
into a feeding vampire and bites Robert on the neck. He passes out and
Janette stops feeding before he is dead. w/voice over NICK speaks.

NICK:- "What made you stop?

Front Story - Morgue (continue)

JANETTE:- "His blood was inside me. //beat// You know that feeling, Nichola.
//beat// It's unlike anything.. a mortal can experience, //long beat// but
there was something more...

Continue flashback w/voice over as Janette continues:

JANETTE:- "Blood calms our hunger //beat// yes, but //beat// his blood calmed
my heart."

Front Story - Morgue (continue)

JANETTE:- "I felt warmth //long beat// and then each time we made love he let
me feed and each time I'd need less and less. //long beat// I don't know.. I
don't //long beat// maybe we were simply meant to be."

A fascinated but frustrated Natalie shakes her head as she speaks.

NATALIE:- "Wait a minute.. wait.. That can't account for what happened; can
it? I mean //beat// fate.. your telling me that all it took for you to become
mortal was love and a little restraint!"

JANETTE:- "No, no, no.. NO! //beat// For that to happen, there was a price to
be paid.

Flashback - Janette and Robert walking outside as Larouche fires at them with
a high powered weapon from atop a building. [Foley shots and explosion SFX]
Robert and Janette speak.

ROBERT:- "Patrick.. take care of my son."

JANETTE:- "No, Robert.. NO! I can save you. I can bring you across Robert!
No!"

Janette tries to bring him across, but she can't change into a vampire.

Front Story - Morgue (continue)

JANETTE:- "I tried to bring him back. //beat// I tried. I don't know if it
was our love making.. or if somehow taking his blood had changed me, but it
didn't work."

Continue flashback - Janette lets out a scream of agony as she kneels over
her dead lover.

Front Story - Morgue

JANETTE:- It was as though eight centuries //beat// of repressed emotion were
being released. //long beat// I thought I was going to die. I hoped I would
die."

NICK:- "Instead you became mortal?"

JANETTE:- "The vampire in me lingered, //beat// or should I say the killer in
me. //beat// But after I killed Larouche, I felt it vanish completely. //long
beat// I'm willing to confess and I will accept whatever punishment I'm
given."

NICK:- "What about Patrick?"

JANETTE:- He still has his Aunt and uncle and they love him deeply.. as I
do."

[Foley phone SFX] Nat answers.

NATALIE:- "Lambert - ah yeh sure I can have that ready for pick up in a few
minutes. //beat// Okay. Well, the real world intrudes. I'm afraid that we
won't have the place to ourselves for very much longer. That local anesthetic
will wear off in about an hour. Here - take one of these every four hours
after that."

JANETTE:- "Natalie, thank you."

NATALIE:- "You're welcome."

JANETTE:- "I'd like to call Patrick's Aunt Peggy to make sure that he's all
right

A man answers the phone and tells Janette that he proposes an exchange;
Auntie and nephew for the KEY!"

Nick and Janette take Nat's car and head for Auntie's house. When they
arrive, they find Patrick and Peggy tied up with tape over their mouths.
Incendiary devices have been planted, but Nick and Janette don't suspect a
double cross.

Tracy asks Natalie for some advice. She wants to know what to do about Nick,
because she thinks he is involved with a murder suspect. She shows Nat a
photocopy of the picture Patrick gave to her. Nat says that it looks a little
like him, but it's hard to tell. She tells Tracy that she knows one thing for
sure, Nick always tries to do the right thing. Tracy is left a bit perturbed.

At Peggy's house, Nick and Janette confront the two henchmen. They give them
the key and think that they are going to leave, instead one of them pulls out
a gun and fires at Nick and Janette. As they leave they detonate the fire
bombs. Nick gets up and unties Patrick and his Aunt. The flames are darting
their long fingers all around as Nick tries to avoid their deadly grasp. He
gets Patrick to help his Aunt out. They make it to safety, while Nick remains
behind to help Janette. She has been mortally wounded and lies dying in his
arms. He says that he can bring her across, but she tells him not to. With
the flames and smoke all around them, Nicholas lets out a blood curtailing
yell as he transforms into a vampire.

NICK'S DREAM:
Natalie explains to Nick that the reason Janette became mortal was because
stuff happens to the blood when you have a certain kind of trauma. She tells
him they have been on the right track all along, and she has proof positive;
they're going to have a baby!

The dream is interrupted by the answering machine. It's Reese wanting to know
where in the Hell he is. He says they have a double homicide at the Civic
Center and he wants him there ASAP!!

(It's at this point that you want to scream, because they have pulled the old
dream bit on you... but I knew they wouldn't dare do that to us.)

When Nick arrives, Tracy asks him how he is. He tells her that he is fine and
thanks her for covering for him. Tracy then says that she doesn't no what he
was doing with this Janette person or why. She just wants to know that it was
the right thing and it's not going to come back and haunt them.

Nick assures her that it's not, but he's not sure if he did the right thing.
Tracy shows him the stuff that was in the locker and says that it looks like
Larouche was up to some pretty dirty business with a very prominent, Toronto
real estate developer.

Nick says hi to Nat and she asks him if everything is smoothed over. He tells
her as well as can be expected. Patrick will be fine with his Uncle and his
Aunt.

Nick tells Nat that what Janette said about Robert and what happened between
them is a chance that he can't take with her life. (and with the luck he has
had bringing woman across in the last few hundred years, I can understand
where he is coming from!)

Nat says that she is okay with that, then asks if he is? Nick says that he
is.. so far. Nat says to him good, because your day has just got off to one
Hell of a lousy start, as she shows him one of the dead henchman with fang
marks on his neck. (Now who could have nailed them when they came for the
evidence? Hmmmm!)

In the final scene, LaCroix speaks to Nicholas in front of the portrait of
Janette that he had returned to her.

LACROIX:- "Even Leonardo couldn't capture all of her beauty. Strange how
things turn out.. isn't it? Through Hellish circumstance - she obtains what
is so allusive to you - only to have that one in a billion happenstance taken
from her by you. I don't know whether to laugh or to cry for you, Nicholas."

NICK:- "She must have left it here today. You haven't told me everything."

LACROIX:- NO! But then, neither have you. It seems that I have lost a
daughter and regained a son.

BRING DOWN THE CURTAIN

Review **** It's all I expected and more. There is one surprise after another
without getting silly. I was misty eyed ten minutes into the play; and what a
fine play it is. Bedard and LaLonde have done a fine job with this shocking
episode. Yep! There are some shocking things in this episode. Ger's direction
is invisible..and that's the best kind. Deborah Duchene deserves those acting
nominations, because she popped back into a series after a year's absence and
did a great job. This episode is totally about Janette, but with a few little
quarks that give Nick and Nat some interesting hope in their quest for love
and mortality.

Boy, do I like this cast. I didn't realize how much I missed the three
amigos. If this were a regularly aired network show, this episode could have
broken records. Instead there will be the spotty ratings that a late night
syndicated show usually gets.
