DEAD OF NIGHT Episode 3-14 (1st Run)

Written by Michael Sadowski
Directed by Jon Cassar

Post Production Release: 01/10/96

Guest Starring Kari Matchett as Alyssa, Corinne Conley as Nanna Tash, Peter
Keleghan as Gefford Weintroff, Barbara Radecki as Andrea King, Leon Pownall
as Davis Ogden, Kim Bourne as Shirelle, Panou Mowling as Jordan Reese, Maia
Filar as Susan

Prologue:
The buyer of an old mansion is being shown around by the seller's agent,
Andrea King, and the caretaker Mr. Spencer. Spencer goes to turn on the
electric and Andrea goes to her car to call Mr. Ogden, the seller, to see
where he is. The buyer, an obnoxious Mr. Weintroff, wonders up to the top
floor; and while looking out the window, someone or something pushes him to
his death.

The Story:
Our heroes arrive for a Q&A with Spencer and King. Neither can explain what
happened, but they are the only suspects at this time. Natalie has checked
out the scene and tells Nick that the railing broke, he fell, he died. She
notices that Nick is frightened by the old house. He asks her to just keep it
between them, then he goes upstairs to check things out. A female cop asks
Natalie to sign the duty roster and she says, referring to the woman's name
tag, that that reminds her of when her Grandmother used to call her Natasha.
The cop doesn't understand what she is talking about, and when Nat looks at
the name tag again, it has changed from Natasha to Kate Nash.

The hauntings begin when Nick sees the ghost of a woman standing by his car.
A shaken Nick gets into the car, then Tracy sees the ghost of a childhood
friend sitting next to him. The ghost disappears and the two anxious
detectives go to see Mr. Ogden.

At Ogden's, the subject of ghosts comes up. He tells of how the house is
haunted, and it acts as a reverse medium where the dead come to the living
for closure. He tells of how his house keeper, Shirelle, has had encounters
there.. in the dead of night. Shirelle is a pretty blond girl that likes to
serve coffee and doubles as his fitness trainer. Hmmmm!

Back at the morgue, the ghost of Natalie's Grandmother comes to ask her why
she never came to visit her in the hospital when she was dying. Nat decides
to cut back on the caffeine. Later, she tells her Nanna that she didn't come
to see her because she resented her.

Reese is beginning to get upset with his troops, because they are not
concentrating on the case. He doesn't want to hear about ghosts! He insists
that Weintroff was pushed. He wants the murderer found.

Nick decides to return to the crime scene. While there, he is visited by the
ghost of his wife, Alyssa. She wants to know if he remembers her. (I don't
care if it was 800 years ago, you don't forget a woman like this!) He recalls
their wedding of many years ago. (This is where the puffy clothes are) The
priest, in full regalia, caused no discomfort to Nicholas.. he must have
really been in love. LaCroix stood at the back of the courtyard, dressed in
black and holding a red rose. Was he about to collect on their bargain
concerning Fleur.. or was this pre Fleur?

Tracy dreams of when her childhood friend and her were crossing the railroad
tracks. Her friend, Susan, got caught in the tracks and was killed by a
speeding train. Later, she is visited by the ghost of Susan who wants her to
play with her.

Later, when the skeptical Cpt. Reese steps onto the Castle House grounds, he
sees the ghost of his older brother Jordan, who was killed in Viet Nam. He
may have felt guilty that he was not able to say a proper goodbye to him.

The Master speaks:- "A ghost is an hallucination of some famous regret. No
more. Ghosts are mistakes that we've made. They come not from beyond the
pale, but rise up from our gravest doubts about ourselves. Each ill
considered thing that we have done is a ghost that haunts us.... If we let
it."

There are a few more deaths and the hauntings continue. Nicholas is in the
greatest danger, because there are many that he has dispatched that want his
butt! Alyssa tells him that he will die; and because of what he has been and
done, he will not be with her... EVER!

Was the killer a ghost or a mortal?
Why did Natalie resent her Grandmother?
Will Tracy play with Susan?
Why is Nicholas' wife of long ago dead?

Episode Quote: "Okay, this conversation has officially gone over the deep
                end!" -Natasha

Review **** Thanks to MS for a fine job. And once again, another excellent
directing job by Jon Cassar. The Gothic sets and special effects made for
some darn spooky atmosphere. And to think, this episode was done after USA
dropped it's backing. They had no billboard at the end! We might still get
some good production through the end of the season.

This story is a spooky mix of Poltergeist and Dark Shadows type ghosts. All
brought about by the old and Gothic looking Castle House.

There were a few very minor problems; a couple of lines were misread and I
questioned why Reese found it necessary to run out to the house with the
report that Tracy was waiting for. Even so, this is a fine episode that dealt
with the supernatural and vampires; and that's good enough reason to pass out
the stars. Once again, everyone is used well.. and I like Tracy's clothes. :)

If you watch this in the dark, beware of spooks from your past. (Boooo!)
