Please Note: Many have asked for one of my complete story synopsizes. This is
complete, with no teasers. Do not read this, if you don't want totally
spoiled. It is very long. I hope this makes Christine happy.
Prologue:
It's a mild October evening, and street bands play as the children of the
night frolic. Away from the sparkle, in an alley, a car is stopped with the
driver against the steering wheel. A beat cop tries to help the woman, when
she yells at him in Latin. As the policeman calls for help, the woman drives
out of the alley--knocking the cop down. The woman drives as though
possessed, until she runs out of highway. The car crashes through a barrier
and hits the ground below--bursting into flames.
The Story:
Nick, Tracy and Reese arrive when they hear the "cop down" squawk. They
confirmed the license that was called in by the fallen cop (Bryant) was the
same as the car that crashed. Tracy tries to talk to Bryant, but he is out.
Nick takes a turn; and after getting Bryant's heart thumping, Bryant tells
him what the woman said in Latin, which leaves Nick a little startled.
Reese lets Nick and Tracy work on the case. They go to the morgue where
Natalie is doing her best to do an autopsy on the burned victim. She remarks
that burn victims are her worst nightmare and offers some Winter Green Gel
for the smell. She has identified the woman as Melanie Sawchuck.
Next it's off to see the next of kin, a religious fanatic, Eric Sawchuck.
They find him passing out literature against the evils of everything, in
front of a strip club. After getting a lecture on the evils of the wicked,
Nick and Tracy go back to the morgue to see if Nat has come up with anything
more. Nat tells them there was one strange thing.. traces of lambs blood
mixed with the victims.
Nick recalls when LaCroix and he were jailed during the Spanish inquisition.
The blood of the lamb was painted on the door to repel evil. The only
repelling being done, was by the sun that streamed through the cross shaped
window. Two other prisoners talk of the Devil and how thousands have been put
to death by the inquisitors; in the name of God. LaCroix talks about how this
God and Devil are a human contrivance and convenience. They are for the
justification of slaughter without the tricky business of accountability. A
prisoner asks Nick if he is also a non believer. Nick tells him if there is a
God, he has not shown himself. LaCroix chuckles.. as if to say, "You fool;
what do you think has cursed you to this forever life of darkness?" The
prisoner tells Nick and LaCroix that although there is evil in them there is
also God. LaCroix gets that confused look of his, when he knows it may be so.
Tracy snaps Nick out of his daydream and it's back to business. Nick wants to
find out more about Melanie Sawchuck and Nat shakes her head, knowing Nick is
on another quest.
At Melanie's apartment, Tracy discovers blood on a smashed window. She
touches a book and a chill startles her. Nick picks up the book. It's a book
on exorcism.
Nick questions Melanie's brother, Eric, as Reese asks Tracy if Nick is
serious about the exorcism thing. She tells him that the room got cold, but
Reese explains it away as a cold October breeze through the broken window.
Eric tells Nick that his sister was being consumed by evil. He says that
there is a Devil that's as real as you or I. Satin sends out his angels to
seduce the weak and confused. Eric tells Nick that he sent his sister to an
exorcist by the name of Dr. Max Vanderwal.
Nick and Tracy drive up to a dark, Gothic looking mansion, where they find a
reserved Vanderwal. He was in the middle of an exorcism when they arrived.
After some questions, Vanderwal sees that Nick wants to know what is behind a
door. He takes them in and shows them a possessed man. (A few similar lines
from 'The Exorcist' and Vanderwal sounding a lot like Richard Burton; sends a
chill up one's spine--or is the window open! This is where it gets scary!)
The crosses and other religious stuff have Nick a bit anxious, to say the
least. Vanderwal performs an exorcism on a possessed man. After a battle of
words, the Demon gives up; and as it leaves the man's body, it says that you
are mine --at that instant, it enters Nicholas.
While driving back to the precinct house, Tracy questions the whole exorcism
thing; accusing Vanderwal of being a dangerous charlatan. Nick swerves to
miss a ghost of the prisoner from long ago. He tells Tracy he saw a cat. A
shot rings out; and they catch a man, with a gun, running out of a drugstore.
Nick uses his, now, very powerful mind control, to get the man to release a
hostage. Tracy takes the girl inside to check everything out. Nick tells the
man to put the gun down, but the Demon has other ideas. Tracy comes out just
as the man kills himself. (I know Nick is blond, but the village of the
dammed.. far out!) Later; this is explained away when it is learned that the
man had suicidal tendencies when he was in prison.
After a rough time at the precinct, Nick goes home where he finds himself
loosing all control. He chugs some blood and his eyes turn green, then a
battle ensues as the Demon tears Nicks apartment apart --just to show him
who's boss, now!
Nick recalls the inquisition; when they came for the prisoner who was an
innocent victim of the church. LaCroix argues with him about his God not
saving him or helping his family. The man tells LaCroix that God is in
everyone --even him, although he serves the Devil. LaCroix snaps back that he
serves no one! Just as they began to take the man away, Nicholas transforms
into a killing vampire. He yells that this man is innocent.. I am the evil
you seek, I am the Devil's servant. LaCroix says to Nicholas, "Really
Nicholas, such crass showmanship."
They release the man and turn their attention to Nicholas and Lucien. Lambs
blood is thrown at them and oil is poured to burn them. LaCroix and Nicholas
are repelled by the cross as they try an escape. Later; Just as the
Inquisitor is about to force them into the fire, the man they saved comes in
and knocks him out. The two vampires escape.
Nick goes to the Raven, which has been transformed back to the way it was
when Janette was the boss. He finds a sexy girl that he gets very friendly
with. He takes her to, what looks like, Janette's old living quarters. In
there; begins a scary, rough round of vampire love. Nicholas seems to want to
kill her, but LaCroix comes in --just in time. Lacroix tells Nicholas that
it's a pleasant surprise to see him like this. After LaCroix sends the girl
away, Nicholas tells him about the exorcism; and how the Demon came into him.
LaCroix tells him that there are no such things as Demons and Devils. After
some pleading and a pretty scary grip on LaCroix's neck, LaCroix agrees to
take Nicholas to Vanderwal. Lucien is beginning to question his beliefs,
again.
At Vanderwal's, there is a lot of talk about possession and how the Devil
finds those who are in turmoil and are in conflict with themselves. It is
this conflict that opened the door for the Demon to possess Nicholas. LaCroix
doesn't want to believe any of it, but he knows that there is something
--after all; what is this vampire, this permanent Hell?
Vanderwal asks who he's speaking to; and after a few lies, the Demon says
that he is the Son of Belial. Vanderwal ask for LaCroix's help. He says that
the Demon is very powerful and no matter what LaCroix believes, he must help
or he will be lost. LaCroix sees and feels that Nicholas is not the same
anymore; and he doesn't want to lose him. (We will never know if it is
because he cares for him, or if he doesn't want to loose the control that he
has had for so many years. I believe it's the former.) The Demon taunts
LaCroix; telling him that he is mine, he no longer needs you. LaCroix will
have none of this! He will help beat the Devil that he wants so hard to
dismiss.
Natalie enters Nick's apartment to find it a shambles. She calls the precinct
to see if he is there. Tracy tells her about the exorcism at Vanderwal's; and
Natalie decides to go see him.
At Vanderwal's; the exorcism has begun and LaCroix stands nervously by. The
Demon repeats that it has revived the vampires taste for death. The de
Brabant's will become killers again. Nicholas keeps recalling the inquisition
and the words of the Inquisitor. LaCroix holds Nick and tells him to fight.
The Demon tells LaCroix that this is not his fight, that LaCroix is one of
them, but LaCroix won't hear of it. He tells Nicholas to fight the Demon;
there is goodness in you, there is God in you --use it! (Yes! LaCroix admits
that there is goodness and God. We all do at certain times, no matter what we
believe.)
The Demon can't handle the powers that have descended upon it. Talk about
pressure! The Demon is being attacked by the exorcist, LaCroix, Nick and God.
The Demon throws down LaCroix and Vanderwal just as Natalie walks in. Nick
leaps from the table and grabs Natalie. He has metamorphosed into a killing
vampire, as in the days of old. Even LaCroix is taken aback! He is really
angry that this Demon has turned Nicholas against Natalie. (Never thought I'd
see that!) Nicholas fights it off as Natalie calls his name. Vanderwal tells
her that it's not Nick. After a bit; Nicholas returns and the Son of Belial
is gone. As much as LaCroix wants Nicholas to be a killing vampire, he never
wanted to see him so out of control that he would kill the one person that he
knows Nicholas loves more than anyone.
Vanderwal tells LaCroix that his belief in the good in both of them helped
save him. LaCroix tells him that he did only what was necessary to reclaim
him. (Reclaim him from what? That statement alone is an admission.)
LaCroix hypnotizes Vanderwal with all the power he can muster; and tells him
that none of this ever happened. Nicholas, LaCroix and Natalie leave a
mesmerized Vanderwal staring at a crucifix.
Epilogue:
Natalie enters Nick's apartment and finds a subdued Nick drinking blood. She
said that she was on the way to the office and stopped by to see how he was.
She tells him that she can stay if he likes, but he tells her no. She says
that he beat the Devil. Not bad for a day's work. Nick tells her that you
could never know what it was like. Nat tells him --maybe not, but we all have
our Demons. Nick tells her --not like this! Nick turns around to look at
Natalie; his eyes are green and there is evil in his look. Natalie tells him
not to do that.. don't do that! Nick holds her head and tells her that it's
all right, don't be afraid. He puts his head to hers as he listens to her
heart beating. The eyes remain green, but the evil is gone. Love is trying to
fight it's way to the fore. After awhile; he turns away and tells Nat that
what happened has set him back a bit. He tells Nat that he hasn't had such a
powerful need for human blood --in a long time.
They both look sad as the camera comes close on Nick's face.
At the radio station; LaCroix does a take on 'Paradise Lost' for us. The
camera comes close as he closes his eyes.

Episode Quote: "Why Nicholas, what a pleasant surprise to see you like
this. ..Finally you have come to your senses, Nicholas."
-LaCroix
Review **** What a wonderful dark story. I laughed when I saw the exorcist,
but I got the chills a couple of times during this fight with the Devil. The
writing, directing and acting were superb. Another A+ for post production and
editing. I don't know which episode I liked better; this one or 'Night In
Question'. This was more in the vane of vampires, evil and all that you would
expect from a show about such things.
In many ways this was a character study of LaCroix. He fights that battle
that we mortals do, all the time. Is there a God, is there a Devil? LaCroix
has been denying both since the series started. But, he also knows that
something made him the cursed creature he is. It is a little more than a bite
on the neck. The more he makes excuses, the more questions arise. When he
says to Vanderwal that he did only what was necessary to reclaim Nicholas, he
is actually admitting that there are Demons and Devils. And if there is a
Devil there must be a God --sane or not.
I will enjoy watching this episode many times. I just like the evil, dark,
Gothic feel it has. After all that's what vampires are all about.
